EXPLORE YOUR

EVERY ATHLETE'S PATHWAY IS DIFFERENT

Some athletes know exactly where they want to go. Most do not - and that is completely normal.

You may have heard about NCAA Division I. You may be hoping for a sports scholarship. You may want to spend a year overseas, combine university with high-level sport, improve before college or explore whether professional sport could eventually be realistic.

Our job is not to push every athlete towards the same destination.

Our job is to help you understand your options and build a pathway that makes sense for you.

UNDERSTANDING US COLLEGIATE SPORT

NCAA, NAIA & NJCAA

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is one of the major governing bodies for collegiate athletics in the United States, supporting student-athletes competing across a wide range of sports and institutions.

NCAA competition is structured across Division I, Division II and Division III, with each division offering a different collegiate experience based on factors such as athletic competition, institutional resources, academic environment and scholarship structures.

NCAA Division I

Division I represents a highly competitive level of US collegiate athletics and includes many universities with extensive athletic programs and performance resources.

Elite athletic competition

Extensive athletic programs and resources

Strength and conditioning support

National exposure and competitive opportunities

Athletic scholarships may be available

NCAA Division II

Division II provides competitive collegiate athletics while placing significant emphasis on balancing sport, academics and the overall university experience.

Competitive collegiate programs

Structured athletic development

Strength and conditioning support

Focus on academic success

 Athletic scholarships may be available

NCAA Division III

Division III combines competitive collegiate athletics with a strong emphasis on academic achievement and the broader university experience.

Competitive collegiate athletics

Strong focus on academic achievement

No athletic scholarships

Academic and institutional aid may be available

Leadership and personal development opportunities

National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)

US Collegiate Athletics

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) provides competitive collegiate sporting opportunities through participating colleges and universities across the United States.

For many student-athletes, the NAIA can provide an alternative pathway into US collegiate sport, combining competitive athletics with university education and athlete development.

NAIA institutions vary in size, location, sporting programs and academic offerings, allowing prospective student-athletes to explore opportunities that align with both their sporting and educational goals.

Sport.png

Depending on the institution, sport, athlete profile and available funding, opportunities may include:

Competitive Collegiate Athletics

Athletic Scholarship Opportunities

Academic Scholarships and Support

Structured Coaching and Development

Strength and Conditioning Programs

Competitive Conference Schedules

Smaller University Communities

Opportunities for International Athletes

The NAIA pathway may particularly suit student-athletes looking for a competitive university sporting environment where they can continue developing athletically while working towards an academic qualification.

Recruitment, admission, eligibility, team selection and scholarship decisions remain subject to the requirements of the relevant institution and governing body.

National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)

US Junior College Athletics

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) oversees collegiate athletics at participating two-year colleges across the United States.

The junior college pathway can provide student-athletes with an opportunity to continue their education while developing their athletic ability in a competitive collegiate environment.

For some athletes, an NJCAA program may also provide valuable time to develop academically, physically and competitively before potentially pursuing opportunities at a four-year college or university.

6.png

Student-athletes may have access to:

Competitive collegiate sport

Structured coaching and athlete development

Academic and technical programs

College-to-university transfer pathways

Training and competition opportunities

Scholarship opportunities where available

Development of academic and athletic skills

Student support services

Potential transfer pathways to four-year institutions

Strength and conditioning programs

A Potential Pathway to Four-Year College

One of the key features of the junior college pathway is the potential opportunity to progress to a four-year institution after completing part or all of a two-year college program.

For student-athletes, this pathway can provide additional time to develop their sporting performance, gain collegiate competition experience and strengthen their academic profile.

Transfer opportunities are not guaranteed and depend on factors including academic performance, athletic ability, recruitment interest, eligibility requirements and the admission processes of the receiving institution.

The NJCAA pathway can therefore be a valuable option for student-athletes who may benefit from an additional development stage before pursuing further collegiate opportunities.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR SCHOLARSHIP OPTIONS

A scholarship should be considered as one part of the overall student-athlete pathway, rather than the only factor when selecting an institution or program.

SLI Sports helps student-athletes explore potential scholarship opportunities alongside their broader education and sporting pathway.

We can assist with understanding available options, preparing an athlete profile, identifying suitable institutions and navigating the recruitment and application process.

Students and families should also consider the quality of the academic program, sporting environment, coaching, location, accommodation, remaining tuition costs, living expenses and the athlete's long-term goals.

Scholarships and financial assistance are awarded solely by the relevant institution or program provider and are subject to eligibility, availability, funding and institutional requirements. SLI Sports does not award scholarships or guarantee scholarship offers, amounts, admission or placement.
